Tooth Extractions Post-Op Care
After your child has had a tooth extracted, they will have an initial healing period of one to two weeks. Your child will probably experience some swelling and discomfort for the first 48 hours.
We recommend that your child:
- Avoids chewing for at least two hours or until the anesthetic wears off
- Uses an ice pack to decrease swelling
- Does not touch the extraction site with their tongue or fingers
- Does not drink through a straw or swish and spit vigorously
- Tries to avoid blowing their nose or sneezing violently
- Does not rinse their mouth the day or surgery
- Relaxes as much as possible, avoids all strenuous activities for the first 24 hours after the procedure and keeps their head elevated
- Maintains a soft diet for 48 hours
